The Most Exciting Affordable Vehicles of 2018
Not considering expensive performance brands, 2017 has been a year of exciting headlines in the auto industry. Automakers that have been traditionally "mainstream" have broken through with their first sports cars, such as the Kia Stinger. We've received confirmation that models from years past, such as the Ford Bronco and Jeep Comanche, will be refreshed and sold again. And Tesla's financially accessible Model 3 has appeared on streets across the USA. It's a great time to be a driver. Here are a few of the most notable, affordable 2018 new cars we've found.
Civic Type R
While this vehicle isn't overwhelmingly extreme for a mass-produced vehicle, it is something many drivers have awaited in America for quite a while. The Civic Type R was restricted from sale in the United States until late 2017, and that "R" isn't attached to the vehicle for no reason. The Civic Type R spins its front wheels with 306 horsepower and maintains control with helical limited slip differential. That's a lot of horsepower for a 3,111-lb vehicle.
The Stinger is Kia's first foray into powerful sports cars and, as 2018 new cars go, it's one of the boldest. It has adaptive suspension, 255 horsepower and styling reminiscent of Maserati or Aston Martin. If 255 horsepower isn't enough, there's a 3.3 L twin turbo option that has 365 horsepower. All-wheel drive is optional as well, making 0-60 possible in around 5 seconds. Not your average Kia, is it? It's also not an average-priced sports car; it starts at just $31,900.
Jeep Wrangler JL
If the 2017 Wrangler wasn't aggressive enough for off-roaders, the 2018 Wrangler JL could be. Ground clearance ranges from 9.7 to a lofty 10.8, much more than the average SUV. It has 41.4 to 44 degrees to its approach angle, depending on trim, and 27 to 37 degrees in departure angle, also depending on trim. These specs are all improved compared to the old JK. The Wrangler's line of available engines has improved as well. There are even talks of diesel and plug-in hybrids coming soon.
The Kona is special, even as 2018 new cars go, because it's so fun. As most carmakers tone down their SUVs, adhering to the standard look, Hyundai decided to design a quick vehicle with a little extra eccentricity. It has a turbocharged engine as an option, a flashy set of tri-color exterior schemes, and an interior that looks like one of a Jaguar or Audi. It's a much more attractive vehicle than you'd expect at its $20,000 base price.
